The Prostate

Know Your Prostate

The prostate gland is a vital male reproductive organ, about the size of a ping pong ball. Its primary function is to produce fluid that nourish and helps transport sperm. Located just below the bladder and wrapped around the urethra, the prostate muscles also aid in propelling semen through the urethra during ejaculation.

How Your Prostate Changes With Age

The risk of developing prostate issues tends to increase with age. This is because the prostate naturally enlarges over time, which can lead to urinary difficulties due to pressure on the urethra.

Conditions such as prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate) and prostate cancer can also arise, with prostatitis typically affecting younger individuals and prostate cancer being more common in older men. It is important to understand that having one prostate condition does not directly increase the risk of developing prostate cancer, and it is possible to have multiple prostate conditions concurrently.

Patient with a Prostate Issues
Prostate issues are common among men, particularly those who are older. Thankfully, regular prostate checks can prevent or address the majority of these conditions.

Early Detection Is Key

It is advisable to seek a thorough prostate assessment from a urologist if you have any of the following risk factors or symptoms:

  • 50 years old and above

  • Frequent urge to urinate, especially at night
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Painful/burning urination or ejaculation
  • Frequent discomfort in the lower back, hips, pelvic or rectal area, or upper thighs
